What's #MakeASplash?

At Stroodles we are not just a straw company, Stroodles is a movement. ‍We are here to help fight plastic waste and straws are just our first channel of choice. Scientists estimate there are over 8.3 billion plastic straws polluting our oceans, that’s a number we can’t even picture. Knowing that, we want to make a change!

That’s why we have launched our #MakeASplash campaign, which will raise awareness of ocean plastic pollution and the devastating impact it is having on our oceans and wildlife. We’ve partnered up with Clean Ocean Sailing to #MakeASplash in the fight against plastic waste in our oceans.

Clean Ocean Sailing

The UN predicts that if we continue to allow plastic to enter our ocean at the current rate, by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish. Did you know that

a staggering 8 million tonnes of plastic waste

enters the oceans every year? That’s equivalent to one bin lorry of plastic dumping into the ocean every minute!
Did you know that more than half a billion plastic straws are used every day around the world?

A staggering 100,000 marine mammals and 1 million seabirds die every year from plastic pollution.

Who are Clean Ocean Sailing?

Clean Ocean Sailing are a local Cornish voluntary organisation that dedicates itself to cleaning our coasts and oceans sustainably under sail, raising awareness about ocean plastic pollution.

Based in the idyllic Helford River in Cornwall, Clean Ocean Sailing hold regular beach cleans down the river to the coves inaccessible by land, which are overflowing with plastic waste. They have also restored their 113-year old sailing boat (named Annette) to carry out this mission!

Clean Ocean Sailing will sail with Annette around European seas, and with smaller crafts, they will paddle and sail around coastlines and visit small, inaccessible beaches where they collect ocean plastic and rubbish!

You can support their amazing work by donating here.

By donating anything you can and supporting their work, you will be helping them to continue organising beach cleans, working with local people and businesses on finding solutions to the problem and keeping the issue of marine litter in the public eye.

Isles of Cicilly clean up expedition

With your help, Clean Ocean Sailing will travel from Cornwall to the Scillies on their boat Annette, to clean up the wild and mostly uninhabited archipelago.

Clean Ocean Sailing have been given special permission from the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust to access Annet, and other islands which usually have a year-round ban on human visitation, meaning they will be collecting and documenting plastic found where hardly anyone has ever been. They are expecting to clean up more than 8 tonnes of man-made marine rubbish from the Isles of Scilly, all of which will be sorted, weighed and recorded, before being brought back to the mainland where it can be properly recycled to ensure it doesn’t end up causing further harm to wildlife.

England’s enchanting archipelago is exposed to the open ocean, so is heavily polluted by plastic washing in on the tide. Many of the coasts are hard to reach and have never been cleaned, so wild animals are unfairly suffering, becoming entangled or ingesting bits of plastic they mistake for food.
By donating anything you can and supporting their work, you will be helping them to continue organising beach cleans, working with local people and businesses on finding solutions to the problem and keeping the issue of marine litter in the public eye.

You can help them make a difference cleaning up this beautiful part of our country.
